Another Gripe! Some People!
[info]mckenpo
Ok... I dislike laziness completely when it comes to doing work that others can see. I also dislike immensely when someone makes you look like the bad guy when they are passive aggressive. That means when they have the same problem about the same person as you but wants you to step up to fight their fight. Makes them look good because they are not complaining. You see...when people don't do their work than it looked upon from me as COMPLETE LAZINESS. Or when they have a problem with something they do not step up to the plate they try to fire you up so you will go tell so "they" look good. Any thoughts?

BODY FOR LIFE by Bill Phillips
[info]mckenpo

I am reading Body For Life again.  I remember a long time ago this is really what worked the best for me.  After this month I am going BFL style.  After PN is over I am going to do the old workouts I was doing before.  I recognize that it was easier to maintain and I liked the advantage of a whole free day!  I am also entering Bill Phillips Holiday Challenge so I won't gain any unwanted weight.  Why am I doing this?  I have done it once before and got lost in the vast knowledge acquired by books and listened to other peoples opinions...So I lost focus.  PN has helped me tremendously but I feel that I have to go back to my roots.  BODY FOR LIFE!

Until  I start the program, I am writing down some things that inspire me from the book.  Although they are not direct qoutes, some are.

"Living up to your potential!"

"When people let go of their bodies it is the beginning of the end."

"Relationship and your life will improve!"

"Noone can help you until you decide you are ready for it."

"Take every emotion you geel and carry it into the weight room."

"Every time you stick with your nutrition and exercise plan you are winning the battle!"

"When you get in shape you have so much more self esteem, it enables you to handle things better and fight!"

"Time lost is  lost forever."

"Obsessing over something does nothing but torture for yourself!"

"Why am I happy?  Because I decided to be happy.  Thats how simple it is and the choice that I have made.  Than I acted on that choice."

"It might sound stange to say that part of making that choice of deciding to change, is learning how to surrender.  I don't mean surrender as in giving up.  I mean surrendering the negative emotions that hold so many of us back."

"Complaining makes you more miserable and just makes problems worse.  None of the problems I've faced ever went away by complaining.  When you complain, you attract other people who complain.  That's a dead end street!"

"Personal Qoute (idea from book): "If I quit I will be quiting on myself _____Fill in Blank___etc as well."

"You have to thrive, not merely survive!"

"Real change starts from the inside.  And that is where you are going to have to find the answer to the first question  Have you made the decision to change.  There is a big difference on deciding something and having reasons for doing it.  The next question is:  What are my reasons for making the decision to change?  When you look at yourself, do you honestly like what you see?"

"We often dont notice if we're slipping.  If we're not careful, before long, the image we have of ourselves in our minds will not be in sync with reality."

AFTER TAKING A PHOTO OF YOURSELF ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS:
How do you feel deep down inside?
How do yu really feel about yourself?
Are you confident, energetic and strong?
Do you often wonder if you're on the right path?
What arev the pros and cons of cointinuing in the direction you are going?
Would you like to creat a brighter future?

When you answer the above questions write them down and read them first thing in the morning and night.  Do this for 12 weeks.

AFTER DOING THE ABOVE ASK YOURSELF:
What are the five most important, specific accomplishments you need to make within the next 12 weeks, for you to be pleased with the prrogress of your BFL?

"Individuals with historical vision are very uncomfortable with the growth of others because it threatens the structure and apparent equilibrium of there own lives.  They are uncomfortable with evolution, so a positive change in those around them is something they fear.  The fact is they probably feel, at some level that they are going to be left behind if they don't start moving their own behinds.  And the truth is, they're probably right."

Update- I am in love with Black Powder
[info]mckenpo
I have not been on here for quite some.  It seems like at times I just get so preoccupied after I have been on a roll for so long do something... That goes for my workouts too.  I just recently recuperated from being sick.  I have to gradually make a comeback with my workouts.  I worked out today and proceeded to put a little happy face on my spreadsheet for a job well done.   I know - you are probably thinking I am a maroon but it makes me happy.

I have also found a great supplement.  I usually get tired during the day so I started taking some Black Powder.  Man that gets me moving through the day and than some!  I first tried Blue Raspberry Black Powder which tastes like a semi-carbonated Cotton Candy drink.  For 35 calories I will take it!  The Fruit Explosion was not as good but man that Cotton Candy drink was the bomb.  I do recommend sipping one packet in a bottle throughout the day because this is some serious stuff!

I am nearing my PN.  I feel like I made some progress but not enough yet!  I am going to continue after November.  I have also put myself in a Biggest Loser Challenge.  Wish me luck!

Re-establishing Goals and Etc.

  • Eat whole/real/unprocessed foods at regular intervals.
  • Sleep 7-9 hours per night.
  • Don't engage in extreme diets.
  • Stay consistent with your habits.

Is She a Trainer or What?
[info]mckenpo
Yesterday was the most craziest day!  I worked out beyond what I should have, but I feel great!  I did 45 minutes of kickboxing, 60 minutes of karate and 30 minutes in the gym.  Man!  I thought I would be feeling it today but the only thing I feel is sorda kinda tired.

So....what is with the title you ask?  Whelp, I was walking towards the gym and there is a group of guys outside. I was carrying a blue thin folder with my workout directions.  I saw the guys look me up and down and say, "Is she a trainer or what?"  Ok there are two reasons why they could of said that:
  1. They thought I looked fit.
  2. They saw my stupid little folder and thought I was going to train someone.
So  I would rather choose number 1.   Makes me feel mo betta.

To date I have lost 10 lbs.  Not bad!  I need to get to 169 lbs by the end of this week.  That's the goal!

I Found My Disicipline Again
[info]mckenpo
There was a time where I would go to karate.  I would go to karate every single day no matter what.  Monday through Thursday from 1-3 hours.  This was my "haven".  Karate was some place where I can get away from reality for awhile.  My favorite quote from Sir is, "When you come into the dojo leave all your troubles outside the doors, they will be there when you leave...that's if you decide to pick them up again.  9 times out of 10 your probably won't".  I enjoy that quote every time he says it.. Sometimes he says it differently but the meaning is just the same.  Yesterday, I remembered what karate was like in the old days.  I worked out for 2.5 hours.   I sparred in the last class.  Sometimes when I am in there it seems so different and than other times I realized that the people are different and some are the same (veterans).  I look forward to the veterans that come in.  They know where we all came from and we dealt with so many newbies.  They also put you in check.  You remember the standard that you are supposed to be setting.  Tuesday my Sensei reminded me during karate aerobics when he told me about the standard I was supposed to be setting because I could not do the exercise everyone else was doing.  I did not stand there I tried to do another form... but I was in the front...so that would not do.  My hips sufferred that day...I have very slight arthritis in the hips, burstitis and tendonitis in my knee.  So it feels like someone is bending my leg to the right or to the left.  Kills!  I did remember though about the example I had to set.... Going to my workouts, staying on top of my program and so forth came so easy when I was in karate and not in school.  It was a fill in for my time that I would probably stick something bad in my mouth!  Hence how I got to the weight I was when I started Precision Nutrition 181 lbs.  Now I am happy to say that progress has been paying off.  I am now down from 181 lbs to 173 lbs....and I am still going too!  Not bad...I feel like I am on top of my game again and it feels great.

The King Of Pop
[info]mckenpo

Michael Jackson has just died on June 25.  When I first heard the devestating news I was sitting at my desk on the 34th floor when my co-worker called.  "Michael Jackson has just died!".  I was in disbelief.  I looked on every internet site and noticed the headlines.  "Michael Jackson has Stopped Breathing".  Ok, I rationalized this as being not true.  I was in complete denial.  I came accross TMZ.  It confirmed Michael Jackson's death.  I felt like someone took my heart and squished it.  There was still that glimmer of hope until others reported it but I knew deep down that it was true...  The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has passed.

From Thursday on I thought of the 80's.  The impact that Michael Jackson has had started with me in the 80's.  I was the only one in the 5th grade that wore a Michael Jackson jacket.  I wore it proudly because no one else had a red one like it.  Thriller was a phenomonom to me.  I watched it religiously.  I thought even then it was the best video around.  Later in 1988 I remember my teacher bringing in the movie Moonwalker.  I later got the book Moonwalker from the library and read about his life.

As time passed I noticed that Michael Jackson started changing.  His music has always seemed to stay relatively the same thought except for the lyrics.  They became more humane and sent a message to the world about how we treat each other.  Some had to do with racism such as Black and White, some had to do with making a change and that change has to come with you first such as Man in the Mirror and sometimes he even had songs about himself called Leave Me Alone.  It was how the media always scrutinized him.  Finally, Heal the World.  Need I say more about this song?  A song about making the world a better place?  Taking things into perspective because people are dying?

Through the years publicity surrounded Michael Jackson.  I was confused as to why they were picking on him.  In a qoute by Elvis Presley, "Don't criticize what you don't understand because you never walked in that persons shoes" really says it all.  Are people afraid again of what they do not understand?  The charges in regards to molestation were dismissed but people still scrutinized him.  If it was not that it was some other thing like his plastic surgery or skin color because of his Vitiligo (changes the pigment in your skin).  Sadly in regards to his Vitiligo he had to cover up his face, hold an umbrella and keep out of the sun.  I can relate to that especially because I have excema which I thought he had from some of the early pictures he was in because I had that myself growing up.

Well... it days later and there is an autopsy that is supposed to answer questions which will answer questions in regards to his death.  The truth is I believe he was on some sort of medication for pain.  Which I feel that he took for awhile...In regards to this I have this to say.  I will start with the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.

Elvis Presley

What does Elvis Presley have to do with this you ask?  Well for one though Michael Jackson married his daughter Lisa Marie Presley.  Elvis Presley was also a taker of prescription pills and felt he needed to function every day he took everything from sleeping pills, demerol, placidels... the list goes on.  So whats the significance?  Lisa once said in an interview that she married Michael Jackson because of there similarities.  She fell in love with him..  I hate the interview with Diane Sawyer but... I feel Lisa handled herself well in this interview and I feel that people fall into the same patterns.  Not purpposely though, but it just happens sometimes.  So in a nut shell.  Lisa's mom married Elvis who had a a problem with drugs, Lisa married someone who could of possibly had a problem with drugs?  We really won't know until the autopsy and it is definitely all speculation.

Lisa Marie Presley

There has been speculation that Lisa Marie Presley married Michael Jackson to help her music career.  Why would she have to do that?  Her father was Elvis Presley?  Does she not already grab enough attention for that reason alone?  Shes not stupid but she falls hard for those she loves.  But as I digress she is talented in her own right with an incredible voice.  I feel she tried to save Michael from all the evils but she had children to take care of and she had to save herself.  It was almost the same thing as her mom Priscilla Presley.  She had a child to think about, Lisa, so she left for many reasons which included trying to get LIsa into a normal life as possible.  When your living in the eye of the public it is hard to keep a marriage together especially if you are Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley .  One thing before you watch the below video.  If you look closely at the pictures of the videos Lisa Marie looks so innocent and free in some of these pictures and very child-like.  Very cool.

So basically those were thoughts I had and felt a need to convey them here.  I really hope he can live peacefully and not worry about the scrutiny that surrounded him in regards to the past.  Hopefully people will stop passing judgements because they hurt everyone.  Just enjoy the music he left the world.

Finally, if you really take a look beyond everything Michael Jackson never truly had a childhood, never truly had a normal life.  From the time he was a child he was put up on stage for the next 45 or so years.  How do you know how to act in every day life with others when all you have to contend with is grown-ups?  In a matter of fact if I were him I would be even afraid of adults and probably would want to stay secluded in my house because of mobs and hang out with people who won't judge me, my appearance or how I live my life.  He once said that if you want to know about him listen to the song "Childhood" . That says it all.

Just remember everyone... we are all human, we only live once and we have to make the most of it and cherish people while they are here because we are all here what seems a short time.

Your The Best Around! - The Karate Kid!
[info]mckenpo

Like my subject line?  "Your the Best Around" is actually a song by Joe Esposito.  It bugs me because Elvis Presley had a friend name Joe Esposito did he write this song?  Go figure.  I think that song is the best song to become motivated to.  It was the off the soundtrack to the karate kid.  That would be cool if it was the same one!   Anyways...I digress.... Here are the lyrics:

Try to be best
‘Cause you’re only a man
And a man’s gotta learn to take it

Try to believe
Though the going gets rough
That you gotta hang tough to make it

History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed

Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til the end
Cause your life will depend
On the strength that you have inside you

Ah you gotta be proud
starin’ out in the cloud
When the odds in the game defy you

Try your best to win them all
and one day time will tell
when you’re the one that’s standing there
you’ll reach the final bell!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ho-how-ho-own

INSPIRING GUITAR SOLO

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own

Fight ‘til you drop
never stop
can’t give up
Til you reach the top (FIGHT!)
you’re the best in town (FIGHT!)
Listen to that sound
A little bit of all you got
Can never bring you down

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down
You’re the Best!
Around!

repeat to fade, occasional background shouts of “Oh Ye-eah!”

This is basically just to talk about my comeback in karate.  My first official day was Monday.  I really was going to start later but I know my karate instructor works his classes out to the max!  So... I feel that it would be in my ultimate best interest to go!  I think it would be great with these workout we are doing with Precision Nutrition!  First day was going over basics again.  Tuesday I did Karate Aerobics and Wednesday we sparred.... so of course after Wednesday I had to get a back massage... after not having one for 10 years.   It was great!

I am glad I am back at karate though and my goals at karate are:

1.  Work my butt off to get in tip top shape, physically and mentally.
2.  Get my 2nd degree black belt.
3.  Improve my sparring skills.

So... wish me luck!!

Why I Should Workout - My Reasons
[info]mckenpo
  • 1.  When I am walking, doing karate, or any type of activity my ankles will feel better.  They will not hurt anymore because I am lighter.
  • 2.  My self-esteem is getting better.  I start to fit better into my clothes, people start to compliment me on my "feline physique" :-).
  • 3.  I won't feel so bad going to karate, being in front of the mirror in front of all the black belts.  I will be 30 lbs lighter and in the best shape of my life.  My karate peers will see that I am light on my feet and moving faster!

Making Excuses - Just Do It
[info]mckenpo
Here I am... the queen of excuses.  I have always talked myself into not working out, not going to karate and so forth.  My retaliation had literally started a argument in my mind with none other than me!  So here are some arguments that I am sure you heard before:

1.  I will do it tomorrow, one day won't hurt.
2.  Aye!  I am sore from yesterday.  It is not good to over train!
3.  The workout that they are giving for the program Precision Nutrition is too long!  I don't wanna!
4.   Then your friend calls while you are getting ready to go to the gym.... "Hey Buddy!  Lets get Shabu Shabu, and then lets go to Guppies and pig out on Boba and Shaved Ice!" (For those who don't know what Guppy is go here:  http://www.myguppyteahouse.com).  Then your friend says, "One day won't hurt!"
5.  If I just have this one drink from Starbucks...Fill it in here.... etc.

Ok!  So you got the point.  I and probably most other people talk amongst themselves about this all the time!  Sometimes we have the willpower but most of the time (probably 9 x's out of 10) we do not have the willpower!  Then we start feeling depressed because we did that "thing" that we promised we would not do last week!  So it becomes a vicious cycle.  Soon the scale starts creeping up on you...pounds up....pounds up...pounds up!  So now you are 30 lbs heavier than before and self esteem is virtually gone... How can that be built up?

Below is some self-retaliation methods against myself from the above statements:

1.  Yes it will hurt!  You better get your butt to the gym.  Remember how hard it is to move in karate....how your ankles are killing you....the more you workout the less pressure on your ankles because you will be a lot lighter!
2.  That is just going to be sore for awhile, get tough, get over it!
3.  Ok... if it is too long improvise!   Do half during your break at work, the rest after work and if you have karate go to karate later!  YES IT HAS TAKEN ME 1 HOUR AND HALF AND IT IS FRUSTRATING TO GET THE EQUIPMENT BUT.... REMEMBER THIS IS ALL FOR YOU!
4.    ignore text lol... go the gym.  Friends mean well but remember go on your free time.  Schedule your workout in!
5.  Um... no Starbucks!  Go get some water put a strawberry in it or go get some PUR at Walmart!  Drink WATER! Drink TEA!  None of that sugar-laden stuff!

Soooo... beat that negative talk!  You will feel proud of yourself once you get in and finish with your workout!

Motivational Quotes and Other Riff Raff
[info]mckenpo
This is a post I am going to do some motivational quotes.  So... keep checking back at this and I will update it ;-)

John Berardi:

"Over the next 23 week, I will do whatever it takes to reshape my body and reach my goals!"

"Indision = tension"

Even thought this motivational quote really was about the task at hand of nutrition and exercise it really said something loud in clear in regards to something that is happening at work.  What I learned from this that the more I stew about something and the more I do not come forward then the other person has got the best of me... then the more upset and tense I get...

Also, I felt this was a good quote because we make decisions of whether or not to do things every day...so... just do it... the exercise, eating healthy and so forth.  In the long run there is a reason why you made that decision in the first place!

Sensei David Torres

"Nothing positive comes out of negative thinking."

Negative self talk is just plain negative.  You mentally beat yourself up.  Don't do it!

"When you come into the karate studio (gym etc) leave all your problems outside.  They will be there when  you leave.  When you leave you can decide if you want to pick them back up or not.  Most likely you won't want to."

Maybe after a hard day the last thing you want to do is work out.  It is so easy to go home and forget all about it.  Once you get into working out you feel better.  Whatever your worries are may be less or you may be able to deal with them a lot better!

Why Some Women Stay Out of the Gym
[info]mckenpo
Yes!  They are many reasons why some women do not like to go to the gym.  Some women are bonafide gym rats- which I used to be.  Yesterday I found out the real reason that I have been staying out of  the gym.  SELF ESTEEM and TOO MANY PEOPLE!  Seeing everyone else in shape, trying to squeeze in with others who are using the same equipment.  I experienced the real reason yesterday.  I was completely upset and very annoyed with what I experienced yesterday at my gym.  This girl I will call "NEWOMI" came up to me.  She wanted to use the Smith Machine.  So we were taking turns.  I quickly noticed that she was going down way to fast and jumping up where the bar will hit down on her shoulder.  I kept quiet about it.  It definitely looked like she could pull something because of the intensity in which she was doing it.  If she did not pull something in her leg she would hurt her shoulder.  Supposedly she was jumping up for her calves (FAST!).   After she completed her set she looked me up and down and watched me do my set.  After I was done she said, "You probably should not be doing weights, you are only building fat on top of your muscle and you are not working your midsection.  That is why you look pregnant."  She then glanced down to my book, "You use a book?"  I told her I did.  I had an image of me slapping her upside the head right about now.  I thought, 'When people say those things, that is the whole reason that beginners get discouraged and why women have problems going to the gym'.  As I continued to listen to her brag about her being a personal trainer for years....blah blah blah... and I should go to LAFITNESS and train with this trainer because he trained her...

In my head, "Ok!  Done with the conversation!"

She proceeded to ask about my diet.  I got excited and started to explain PRECISION NUTRITION.  She then said, "What do you eat?"  I said, "Veggies, and...."  Oh no, you should not Protein!"  Um... I was not FINISHED !  "You should not even consume protein in a powder form unless you are building muscle!"  Well!  Maybe I was building muscle?  Maybe I wanted to lose weight?  Maybe I want to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger and really buff?  It is my prerogative!!  I mean heck!  Did I even ask for her two cents?  I started to have a problem with this whole conversation. I really wanted to run out of there before I said some "stuff' of my own.  So... this is the problem...why some girls do not like to go to the gym.  This is a huge discouragement.  Every one has there own idea about nutrition and exercise.  I decided not to mention anymore about me or I would be just as bad. I stayed quiet. I would of been more confused and angry with all this misinformation presented.  She would not be the only one I ran into this week who wanted to talk and provide me their two cents.  I took her advice with a grain of salt, politely smiled and went off into my own little world,:

"Hmm.., I thought..."I am going to come back tomorrow and do upper body.  I wonder what the stretching is going to be like.  I had a good stretch today, I even broke a sweat!  This girl talking makes me want to stick to my plan more to rebel.  Oh my gosh!  She is still talking!  Stop!"

All I heard in the mean time was, "Gwak, Gwak, Gwaka, Gwak" just like the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoons.  Finally, I got tired and knew I had to go on with my work out.  I said, "well thanks for all the tips, I must continue with my workout".  Seriously though I was nice...but lost interest as the record player played on.  If I really needed sound advice I  would ask!  Geesh!   I have a lot of faith in my program PRECISION NUTRITION!  For the females who do not know much about nutrition they would be so lost and discouraged.  I was there once.    Even though I do know about a little bit about nutrition and exercise I double check myself and listen to what others have to say... but then again you know how that can go based on this blog entry.  Now I know I must have preservance and patience to get through my program with all this mixed information from gym members.  In the end of the conversation she said, "Take my advice!  I know what I am talking about!"  NOT!!!

Personal Update
[info]mckenpo
There has been so many changes within my life in the last I don't know... years.   I work in Downtown Los Angeles.  A different law firm then  I was working at 4 years ago when I stopped writing in this journal.  It is actually in the same building and way better!  Of course a better firm too since it is number 1 corporate Law Firm in the world. Yahoo!

The past 3 years I have been going to Cal State Fullerton to finish my Bachelors of Science in Human Services..which I just recently finished last month.  Why did a major in Human Services?.  My outlook is... we are put on this earth together we might as well help each other!  Seriously though it is something I enjoy doing.  Human Services is more geared towards Social Work and etc.  This is very different then working in Law Firms where I have experienced a "dog eat dog" attitude.  A totally different atmosphere from what I have experienced during my educational career was working for the City of Whittier and a homeless Shelter.  At the City of Whittier I worked in the Therapeutic Recreation program with adults who were  developmentally disabled.  It was great!  I met a lot of awesome people there and looked forward to being there every day.  I was able to implement a martial arts class at Game Night which was quite enjoyed by all.  A the Homeless Shelter it was enjoyable as well, but at the same time I was affected by every person that came into the homeless shelter.  During our recession I was there at the front lines assisting them.  Many lost there jobs which cost them to be homeless.  That  was something really hard to see.

In my life I feel that people do not always enjoy what they do, but I enjoyed being at these 2 places which helped me to take a good look at life from a different perspective.  I learned not to take anything or anyone for granted.  We are all on this earth for a short time and while we are here we might as well try to make it a difference in others life by helping. It was an experience talking to different people within the shelter and getting to know some of the 150 people that were there.  The day I left the shelter was the hardest but the happiest.  Many individuals talked about finding them a place, a future job and their hopes and dreams.  I was happy that the very last week I was there a group individuals found places to live and jobs (especially in this recession!).  Also the very last day everyone acknowledged I was leaving and gave kind good byes and big hand!  I can't believe they were clapping and giving me high fives!  I was awestruck.  It was a great experience and it is also rewarding too!

Well now that I have graduated I have many plans for the next step... but getting there will take some time.
